Halal Food Guy Map
Privacy policy
Last updated 11 October 2026
- No cookies, no advertising trackers, and I never sell or share your data.
- Visits are counted anonymously. Your IP address is never stored, only a scrambled one-way code.
- Your saved list and settings stay on your own device.
- If you write a community review, the name and words you choose are shown publicly.
1Who I am
This map at halalfoodmap.app (also map.halalfoodguy.co.uk) is run by Halal Food Guy, an independent halal food reviewer in London. I am the data controller for the information described here. For anything about your data, email halalfoodguy@gmail.com.
2What I collect and why
| What | When | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anonymous visit stats | Every visit | To see how many people use the map and which features and restaurants are popular. Counted with Umami, which uses no cookies and does not identify you. | Aggregated counts only |
| Your postcode district (e.g. E6) | Only if you tap “Near me” | To see which areas people search from. Your exact location is never stored. | Aggregated counts only |
| Your ratings and votes | When you tap “Been here?” or vote for my next review | To show community scores and the “where next” ranking. | Until the restaurant or suggestion is removed |
| A scrambled code of your connection | Saved with a rating, vote, suggestion or community review | So each person counts once, and to stop spam. It is a one-way code made from your IP address; the IP address itself is never stored. | As long as the rating, vote or review it belongs to. Daily anti-spam codes are deleted after about two days. |
| Restaurant suggestions | When you suggest a place | So I can consider reviewing it. | Until I have dealt with it |
| Community reviews | When a Pro member writes one | To show them on the Community page. The name, score and text you write are public. | Until you ask me to remove it, or I remove it |
| Pro licence details | When you buy and unlock Pro | To check your licence and limit it to two devices. I keep a scrambled code of your licence key and email, a partly hidden copy of your email (like na•••@gmail.com) and a random ID for each device. | For as long as your licence is active, plus up to 6 years for purchase records |
| Messages you send me | When you email or message me | To reply to you. | As long as needed to deal with it |
3What stays on your device
Some things are saved only in your own browser (local storage), not on my server: your “My list”, light or dark mode, the ratings you have given, a random device ID, and your Pro unlock. They are needed for the features you use, so they are not cookies and need no consent banner. Clearing your browser data deletes them.
4Payments
Pro is sold through Payhip, who take your payment and email you your licence key. I never see your card details. Payhip tells me about a purchase or refund so your licence works, or stops working after a refund.
5Other services the map uses
To work, the map loads files from these services. Like any website, they receive your IP address when your browser fetches from them:
- Cloudflare hosts the site and its database, and protects it from attacks.
- OpenFreeMap and OpenStreetMap provide the map tiles.
- Google Fonts and cdnjs provide the fonts and map software.
- Umami counts visits anonymously.
- postcodes.io turns your location into a postcode district, only when you tap “Near me”.
Links to Google Maps, Instagram, WhatsApp, X or Facebook take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.
6The legal basis
Under UK GDPR, I use your information because it is needed to provide what you asked for (Pro, your reviews and ratings), and for my legitimate interest in running a useful, spam-free map and understanding how it is used. I never use it for advertising profiles and I never sell it.
7Your rights
You can ask me for a copy of the information I hold about you, ask me to correct or delete it, or object to how I use it. Email halalfoodguy@gmail.com. Most of what I hold is anonymous, so for ratings or reviews please tell me the restaurant, the date and the name you used. If you are unhappy with how I have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
8Children
The map is for a general audience. Community reviews and Pro are for people aged 13 or over.
9Changes
If this policy changes, I will update it here and change the date at the top.
